Quilt Coat Class
This will be a 2 day intensive to learn to make a quilt coat. This is an intermediate level class. Students should have good working knowledge of their sewing machines. Students do not need experience sewing clothing.
Class will run 9am-4pm both days. You may bring food and snacks. There is a refrigerator available for class use.
Students will need a minimum 70" x 70" finished quilt (does not necessarily need to be bound). This can be store bought or can be something you have made.
*STUDENTS MUST PURCHASE THE PATTERN ONLINE FROM THE DESIGNER (PURCHASE HERE). THE SPARKLY ELEPHANT WILL PROVIDE THE LARGE FORMAT PATTERNS PRINTED FOR STUDENTS AS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE. There are muslin forms for each size available at the shop so you can determine which size will be best for you.
This is a 2-day class. On the first day we will focus on layout and construction. The second day we will focus on finishes. If time permits, we will do a small bonus project with scraps on day two. You must know how to operate your machine well if attending this class.
Purchase & Print Pattern - Patchwork Chore Coat PDF Pattern - Patchwork and Poodles (The shop will provide the large printed patterns for each student, but you MUST purchase the pattern.
Quilt size - Minimum 70” x 70” or larger if fussy cutting - please call if you have any questions.
Prepare Bias Binding- The amount of binding you need will depend on your choice of finishes. Please do not bring store bought bias binding. You will need two sizes of binding:

1-1/2” inner bias binding- 2 yards binding for neck seam, and hood. Do not fold and iron. You may need more if you decide to bind the inner seams so, please bring extra just in case.

2-1/4” outer bias binding – approximately 6.5 yards for under arm/side seam, jacket front and bottom, around hood/collar, pockets & cuff
Minimum tools required:
Sewing machine for straight & zig zag stitch.
Coordinating threads for binding, buttons etc.
Stiff pins or clips
1/4” foot
General purpose foot for zigzag & creating ½” seams.
good scissors for cutting multiple layers & paper scissors.
Sized Pattern (shop will print out large format patterns, but students must purchase the pattern)
needle & thread if hand sewing your binding.

Walking foot
Binding foot – HIGHLY RECCOMENDED for machine sewing binding (Martelli binding foot is available at the shop).
Serger - if you want to serge seams vs zigzag.
Buttons
Buttonhole foot (if adding buttons)
Stiletto or awl
*Class Cancellation Policy*
Cancellations or changes to a class must be made no later than 7 days prior to the class. Cancellations made 7 days or or less prior to the class are not available for refunds or store credits. Our class numbers are limited, and and such we need 5 days or more to begin advertising the vacant seats in the class. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
*CLASS LATE POLICY*
Classes start promptly on time. Students are expected to arrive 10-15 minutes early to set up their sewing machine and make sure they have the required supplies listed in the class description (all supplies are the responsibility of the student unless specifically listed as provided by the shop). Students may purchase anything they need for the class on the day of the class prior to the star of class for a 15% discount. Students who are 15 minutes or more late may stay for class but may not be able to fully participate in the class. The instructor will not be able to cover missed material. Refunds will not be given for late or no-show students.
